Social Media Policy

This policy (the “Policy”) governs the publication of and commentary on the The Florence Belsky Charitable Foundation’s (the “Foundation”) various social media platforms by advisors of Foundation (the “Advisors”) and its related programs, including but not limited to I Can Still Do That, First Mondays, Women Who Lunch and any of its committees or groups (“Programs”). For the purposes of this Policy, social media means any facility for online publication and commentary, including without limitation, blogs, wiki’s, and social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Flickr, and YouTube (the “Social Media Sites”).

Advisors are free to publish or comment on our Social Media Sites in accordance with this Policy.

Setting Up Social Media

Social media identities, login IDs, and user names may not use the Foundation’s name or other materials or the name of any of its Programs without prior written approval from the Director or Associate Director.

Be Honest

We believe in transparency and honesty and ask that you do not blog or post anonymously or use pseudonyms or false screen names. Use your real name and do not say anything that is dishonest, untrue, or misleading. What you publish will be around for a long time, so consider the content carefully and be cautious about disclosing personal details.


Our Social Media Sites are meant to help spread the messages of our Advisors and we welcome postings about other events and businesses besides our own. However, we do ask that you keep your posts relevant to the Foundation’s message and mission. The Social Media Sites are not meant to be a billboard advertisement for your company but rather a place where our Advisors can connect with each other and with the Foundation without feeling pressured by advertisements, so please limit the number of advertisements you post on the Social Media Sites to ONE post per page per WEEK. Posts that do not respect this rule will be removed without notice. The Foundation has final approval over all posts to the Social Media Site and may remove or deny approval to any posts in its sole discretion. You may also post an advertisement or event on our website by submitting it through the website portal.

Keep It Relevant

When making a post, make sure you understand your audience. Keep your posts relevant to the mission of the Foundation and don’t make a post unless you have something relevant and interesting to share with the group.

Limit On Number Of Posts

Due to a large number of Advisors and the high volume of traffic on our social media sites, we ask that you limit your posts to ONE post per WEEK on each social media page or group. We reserve the right to take down any posts that violate this rule.

Respect Copyright Laws

It is critical that you show proper respect for the laws governing copyright and other intellectual property and fair use or fair dealing of copyrighted material owned by others, including the Foundation’s own copyrights and brands. You should never quote more than short excerpts of someone else’s work and always attribute such work to the original author and/or source. It is a good general practice to link to others’ work rather than reproduce it as though it was your own. The Foundation reserves the right to immediately and without notice remove any posts that, in the sole discretion of the Foundation, may violate the intellectual property rights of others.

Respect Your Audience, The Foundation, and Fellow Advisors

The public in general, and the Foundation’s Advisors, in particular, reflect a diverse set of customs, values, and points of view. Don’t say anything contradictory or in conflict with the Foundation’s website, mission or goals. Don’t be afraid to be yourself, but do so respectfully. This includes not only the obvious (no ethnic slurs, offensive comments, defamatory comments, personal insults, obscenity, etc.) but also proper consideration of privacy and of topics that may be considered objectionable or inflammatory – such as politics and religion. Use your best judgment and make it clear that the opinions expressed by you are yours alone and do not represent the official views of the Foundation.

Protect The Foundation’s Advisors

Advisors should not be referenced without their approval. Never identify an Advisor by name without permission. Posts that reference an Advisor without permission will be removed without notice upon request from the mentioned Advisor.

Controversial Issues

If you see misrepresentations made about advisors in the media, you may point them out, but always do so with respect and with the facts. If you speak about others, make sure what you say is factual and that it does not disparage that party. Avoid arguments at all costs. Brawls may earn traffic, but nobody wins in the end. Don’t try to settle scores or goad competitors or others into inflammatory debates. Make sure what you are saying is factually correct.

Be First to Respond to Your Own Mistakes

If you make an error, be upfront about your mistake and correct it quickly. If you choose to modify an earlier post, make it clear that you have done so. If someone accuses you of posting something improper (such as their copyrighted material or a defamatory comment about them), deal with it quickly – better to remove it immediately to lessen the possibility of a legal action.

Think About Consequences

It’s all about judgment; using Social Media Sites to trash or embarrass the Foundation, our Advisors, contributors, and vendors, is dangerous and ill-advised. Be smart about protecting yourself and your privacy.

Social Media Tips

The following tips are not mandatory but will contribute to the safe use of social media.

• The best way to be interesting, stay out of trouble, and have fun is to write about what you know. There is a good chance of being embarrassed by a real expert, or being boring if you write about topics you are not knowledgeable about.

• Quality matters. Use spell-check.

• The speed of being able to publish your thoughts is both a great feature and a great downfall of social media. The time to edit or reflect must be self-imposed. If in doubt over a post, or if something does not feel right, either let it sit and look at it again before publishing it, or ask someone else to look at it first.

• Protect your privacy. Privacy settings on social media should be monitored and set so that your information can only be accessed by those you choose. Be mindful of posting information that you would not want the public to see.

• Publication and commentary on social media carry similar obligations to any other kind of publication or commentary and could land you in trouble if you do not respect these obligations.


Violations of this Policy will be subject to immediate removal from the Social Media Sites without notice. Continued violation of this policy despite removal may subject you to being removed as an Advisor and banned permanently from the Social Media Sites.
