High summer temperatures and lack of rain haven’t seemed to slow down the zucchini and cucumbers at the UGC community garden (“Shagbark Garden”). We harvested some wonderful veggies that we brought to the Boys & Girls Club and cooed in meals for our summer apprentices!
The UGC Apprenticeship Program
During the second week of our Apprenticeship Program we continued practicing basic forestry skills, organized our recently milled lumber into size-specific groupings, and started creating terraced growing spaces with the logs that could not be milled. We’d like to thank community members Alex Baderian and Desiree Lyle for coming out and helping us move logs, woods chips and shale at the UGC site during our second week!
The Re:seed Saugerties Learning Garden
Our second week at the Re:seed garden was very productive. We worked with a lot of new kids to build trellises for tomato plants, plant Jacob;scattle beans for food and nitrogen, and weed the garden beds.Thank you to Sierra Hogan, who has been helping us for the past three years in the Re:seed Saugerties Learning Garden, and to Jess Riozzi for teaching us how to make strong tomato plant trellises from sticks!
