The Word of the Day Builds Mental “Muscle”
![]() Happy Friday! In my webinar on Wednesday, students used the Word of the Day practice to create a five-minute scene or a short essay or blog post. What was amazing was not that the entire class succeeded but that the student’s work was both authentic and complete! My student, Steve, just sent me this testimonial: “Wanted to share something I feel Word of the Day students should be aware of. When I first started working with Marilyn around August 8, about 2 1/2 months ago, I did the word of the day exercise each day religiously for the first six weeks. During that time, I wrote approximately 37,000 words. Then, after that, for some reason, I stopped doing the word of the day, and my production slowed to only 5,000 words over the next four weeks. I am now back to my daily practice of the word of the day and my writing is picking up again.” And my student, Belle, wrote this: I have been a writer for the dental community for twenty years as myself and as a ghostwriter. My dream was to write plays, so two years ago, I began taking online classes about playwriting and character and plot development. My biggest challenge was fleshing out my characters to be believable as human beings. According to critics, characters seemed one-dimensional or lacking a back story and motivation. I have been showing up for Marilyn’s Word of the Day program, and I am so pleased with the improvements in my character development and seeing other ways to communicate my character’s actions. I would highly recommend WOD. I’m sharing their experience to emphasize that writing is a physical exercise and, like getting in shape, writing must be practiced regularly. One of the reasons that the Word of the Day Practice is so effective is because it’s a mini workout that you do every single day. Creativity is a muscle that can be strengthened by practice like any other muscle in your body!
