The Legacy Continues.

Dear Friends,

It’s been a momentous time in history and we’re just getting started.  As an update, I was requested by Author, Journalist, Political Strategist, and Analyst Juanita Tolliver to prepare an opening statement to be read at a recent convention joined by Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley and Congresswoman Barbara Lee on the historic moment as an extension of Shirley Chisholm’s legacy. It was an honor as an individual who lives in Chisholm’s community and has dedicated my life to ensuring the legacy of Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm lives. Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm’s pioneering work and vision remain influential and inspirational for future generations and with this most profound, relevant, and important moment, during Chisholm’s Centennial.  Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm is the foundation for this moment in time for America. During Chisholm’s groundbreaking run in 1972, as the first black candidate for a major-party nomination and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, she understood all of our voices matter, going out to the college campuses, which the first election 18 year olds had the right to vote and spoke fluent Spanish mobilizing our Latino brothers and sisters to speak truth to power. Shirley’s vision of Education and Empowerment, Representation and Equality, Cultural Awareness and Inclusivity, Reproductive Rights advocating for social justice, equality, and civil rights, were a few visions of Shirley.  And, if you have a moment that you need extra energy or a level of fearlessness bringing your chair to the table going out into your community to mobilize a high voting turnout ask yourself: what would Chisholm do?

Peace and Blessings,

“Hope is making a comeback”. – Former First Lady Michelle Obama
