Roz’s spirit is best captured in her own words, “I am only gone in body, which served me well for 68 years. My body got tired, but my spirit will live on. I now look forward to serving and loving you in ancestral form.” The Roz Ayers-Williams Scholarship is awarded for two-year cycles. Recipients to date are: Marcus Scott, Sondai Nanabuluku, Aliyah Curry, Christopher Hampton, and Avery Sharpe, and Anterior Leverett.“As a young writer and filmmaker focused on Black female sexuality and mental health, WTP would help me hone in on my voice and make sure that the voices of women are heard. The critique sessions and table reading opportunities would help me as I begin this career, to have my words heard and living instead of stuck on the page. The more I learn, the better I can reach and serve my community with plays.” ~ Aliyah Curry 2020-2022 Recipient of The Roz Ayres-Williams Memorial Scholarship for Black PlaywrightsThe Barbara Molette Scholarship was founded in 2022 by WTP Member Carlton Molette to honor his wife of 59 years. Dr. Barbara Molette was a theatre and motion picture actress, costume and makeup designer, director, playwright, and noted scholar. The Barbara Molette Scholarship funds an annual WTP membership for an artist who self-identifies as Black (and/or African-American) and Femme (and/or female). In addition to a free membership, the recipient receives mentorship, access to all of WTP’s programs, and the opportunity to develop and achieve custom-designed artistic goals. The inaugural recipient of the Barbara Molette Scholarship was Kelundra Smith, and this years recipient is Esther Gatemba. WTP is also determined to provide access to membership for all interested playwrights regardless of ability to pay. We, therefore, waive partial and full membership dues on a case-by-case basis.Help sustain our scholarships that allow WTP to continue waiving membership dues for those who could not otherwise afford to join?
