EnrichHER Founder Featured in Black Enterprise
When 15-year-old Roshawnna Novellus witnessed her mom working multiple jobs to ensure she had everything she needed, she knew she had to create a strategic plan for college. Novellus decided to reach out to over 200 companies to inquire about scholarships. Her persuasive pitch worked, and companies decided to invest in her educational goals.

With $600,000 in funding, Dr. Novellus was able to pay for 11 years of higher education. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from the University of California, Santa Cruz. In addition, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management Economics from the same University.

Then, Dr. Novellus went on to earn a Master of Science in Information Technology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 2007, she finished her Ph.D. in Systems Engineering, with a minor in Finance, from The George Washington University. To top it off, she achieved Summa Cum Laude in each degree program.

Drowning in News?
Here’s a 60-second Glance at the Past Week
(Though it may have felt like a month)
What Happened?

    •  The state of Washington partnered with Starbucks to accelerate vaccine distribution
    • A new round of the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) opened to applications
  • The U.S. Presidential Inauguration took place today, where Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States and Kamala Harris as the first Black woman Vice President

Stories to Keep an Eye On:

    • ByteDance, owner of video app TikTok, launched an electronic payment platform, Douyin Pay
    • Around 6,000 Amazon workers in Alabama will decide whether the company forms its first U.S. Union
  • A group of Uber and Lyft drivers filed a lawsuit  to overturn the state’s controversial Proposition 22  decision, which let the rideshare giants companies continue classifying workers as contractors
What It Means for Women-Led Businesses

Public-private partnerships can play a critical role in distributing critical healthcare services, such as COVID-19 vaccination, as Washington’s collaboration with Starbucks shows. However, many communities have historically lacked equitable access to this kind of care.

Diverse founders are more likely to locate their businesses in Black and Brown spaces, providing unique opportunities to reach residents of underserved areas. Supplying capital to businesses owned by Black women and women of color is an important way to help ensure the coronavirus becomes a thing of the past for everyone.
