Kitty was nominated for the Pew Charitable Trust’s Distinguished Arts Journalism Award, granted to “writers likely to alter the direction of American criticism”, by the late Vincent Wagner, artistic director of Woodstock’s Maverick Concert series, and author Gail Godwin, companion of composer Robert Starer. Manager of international string quartets, including the Tokyo, the Cleveland, the Concord and the Composers, Wagner wrote: “Kitty is one of the most discerning writers on the string quartet in the country”; further, “She is the only critic in the business who can recreate the energy of a performance on the page.” Ms. Godwin said: “Kitty transcends aesthetic boundaries in reviews that evoke the living anima of performing artist and the composer’s vision, fusing profound insight with beatific prose.” Writing about the future of classical music for MusicWeb International, Frank T. Manheim cited her commentary on the Cleveland and Cavani string quartets as an example of “ the most vibrant voice in contemporary classical music criticism.” A graduate of Sarah Lawrence and former doctoral candidate in the Department of Comparative Religion at Columbia University, Kitty’s artistic background includes study at Northwestern’s drama school, Juillard and private coaching with Maestro Vincent LaSelva, artistic director/conductor of the NY Grand Opera.
