Bio: Composer, lyricist, and all-around goofball Ari Shagal describes herself as “the secret freak offspring of Todd Rundgren and Laura Nyro.” As the front woman of the Summarily Dismissed, this University of Chicago alumna occupies a distinct niche in the music world– that of the funny woman. In a society that discourages women from flying the flag of humor, Ari bravely bucks the trend, casting herself in the mold of such veteran eccentric musicians and bands as Randy Newman, Tom Waits, Ween, and They Might Be Giants, in addition to the aforementioned Rundgren. Other compositional influences include Donald Fagen, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, and Gil Evans. The Summarily Dismissed will release their album Throw Money in the fall of 2009.
